Orpington is set to get a seven screen cinema complex as part of a £10 million mixed-use development just approved by Bromley Council.

Backing from the council’s development control committee paves the way for the development of the Walnuts Shopping Centre, which will include shops, restaurants and an improved public square as well as the town’s first cinema in 30 years.

Miller Developments' scheme, which is targeted for completion by the end of 2013, includes plans to relocate the existing market to the adjacent College Square, plant two new mature walnut trees and create a glazed frontage for the cinema lobby.

Development control committee chair Peter Dean said the scheme, which will create 130 jobs, would enhance public amenities in the town.

“The project has a great deal of planning merit and has benefited from consultation with the local community and the committee unanimously agreed that the scheme will greatly benefit Orpington,” he said.
